Typically the bowls will arrive fully insured in about 3 weeks. What Is Just Intonation Tuning And How Does It Differ From A Normal Chakra Set?

Just Intonation is a natural harmonic progression that follows sacred geometric ratios of nature that correspondingly create beautiful harmonies. Many musicians believe the bodies’ neurology responds well to these harmonics, creating deeper states of harmony and relaxation, thus creating a template for deeper healing and wellness. In this Just Intonation set, you will receive the tones Do-Re-Mi-Fa-So-La-Ti-Do just as you would in a normal Chakra Set. (You can hear sound files for the bowls at the bottom of the page). The difference between this set and the normal chakra set, is that the bowls in this Just Intonation set are in simple mathematical relationship, that are considered to bring about more perfect harmonics.

The normal chakra set is tuned using Equal Temperament tuning. Equal Temperament is the world standard for tuning at this point and evolved out of Just Intonation tuning. What happened was, in the 16th century western composers began tempering the Just Intonation scale, creating alternative mathematics for the notes, because it sounded better to their ears when they composed more complex music with greater musical range and utilizing multiple key changes. Fundamentally the scale had been altered away from natural harmonics.

Just Intonation, simply put, is a musical scale using mathematical ratios in relationship to a fundamental note. For example, let’s say the first note in the musical scale is a C resonating at 261hz. The C is the fundamental note of the scale. All of the other notes are calculated using simple mathematical ratio to the 261 hz value of that C. The mathematical ratios for the whole set are:

Fundamental Note: 1:1

Second: 9:8

Third: 5:4

Fourth: 4:3

Fifth: 3:2

Sixth: 5:3

Seventh: 15:8

Eighth: 2:1

If you created a 8 note scale using these ratios, you naturally achieve a scale that sounds Do,Re,Mi,Fa,So,La,Ti,Do. Unlike the Equal Temperament tuning used today, this 8 note scale is all in simple mathematical relationship to the fundamental note. Many believe this allows for richer and more pleasing harmonic relationships. The idea is that the brain has a much easier time processing sounds that are in simple harmonic relationship rather than a complex harmonic relationship. The major third (or third note in the scale) for example in the just intonation scale is simply a 5:4 ratio. In the equal temperament scale of the chakra set the major third is approximately a 635:504 ratio. The more a tone strays from a simple ratio, the harsher it is in sound. For example, the most harmonic relationships are the 2:1 or octave, and the 3:2 or major fifth.

These bowls are guaranteed to be made of premium grade crystal ‘sand’, the highest quality materials in the crystal bowl industry, which gives the best luster and voice quality to the bowls. They are guaranteed to be within +/-5 cent pitch variation of perfect pitch, in your choice of 432 Hz or 440 Hz tuning. This standard of tuning is above the crystal bowl industry standard of +/-10 cent variation in tuning for perfect pitch bowls. Often, we are finding sets sold online that are far beyond a +/- 10 cent variation that gives the set a dissonant quality. We only provide crystal bowl sets that are in perfect incremental tuning, so that the notes follow the scale accurately from lowest to highest note, as they would on a piano keyboard. What Is 440hz and 432hz Tuning? Which Should I Get?: There is a good deal of information online about the differences between 440hz and 432hz tuning, and which is better. Here we will just discuss the literal meaning of tuning musical instruments as it is a key understanding for the purchase. If you can imagine a piano, there is a key in the middle called “middle A” or “4^th octave A”. On almost all musical instruments in the world this middle A key is tuned to resonate at 440hz. All the other notes higher and lower on a piano are then tuned in relationship to middle A equaling 440hz. This is the meaning of 440hz tuning and is the international standard for tuning musical instruments all over the world. Guitars, flutes, pianos, violins, harps, etc. all over the world are tuned assuming the middle A note equals 440hz. If you are going to purchase your crystal bowl set planning on playing with other musical instruments, such as a harmonium for example, you will most likely want to buy 440hz tuning so that your bowls play in harmony with your musical instruments. 432hz tuning is simply if you flatten the middle A key of a piano or other musical instrument by 8 hz to equal 432hz instead of 440hz. Then all the other notes higher and lower are tuned in relationship to middle A equaling 432hz. With 432hz tuning you get a slightly lower pitch with each note in the set.

432hz and 440hz tuning are both based in Equal Temperament tuning. In Equal Temperament tuning everything in tuned in relationship to the middle A. Though as discussed above in Just Intonation tuning everything is tuned to the fundamental note of the scale. So 432hz and 440hz tuning does not translate perfectly to Equal Temperament tuning. With Just Intonation tuned sets, choosing 432hz and 440hz means that the fundamental C note of the set, will be tuned to either 432hz or 440hz tuning Equal Temperament. Many of the bowls in the set will be still considered perfect pitch 440hz or 432hz Equal Temperament tuning, though specifically the E, A and B bowls in Just Intonation tuning are different enough from Equal Temperament that they would not be perfect pitch 440hz or 432hz tuning.

How Do I Use A Set Of Singing Bowls For Therapeutic Healing?: When we move in the direction of bright and clear coherent awareness it is only natural that we encounter and let go of the trauma, suffering and beliefs that we are holding onto and that are cyclically affecting our lives. Using more than one crystal bowl can create harmony between notes. Using more than one bowl can as well create melody. During a meditation, changing notes and creating melody can help people move their awareness more freely, and refocus their awareness away from the attachments of the mind. Using one bowl is highly effective, though many people appreciate and have an easier time continuously paying attention to multiple tones playing sequentially or a melody. Many people use the crystal bowls to align, awaken, heal, or balance the chakras. The chakras are energy centers in our subtle energy body, known by many names to spiritual cultures around the world.
