The Pangi seed comes from Pangium edule, a towering evergreen tree native to the rainforests and mangrove swamps of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia, and the wider Malesian archipelago. Deeply significant across the region, the Pangi tree has been woven into the food traditions, medicine, and material culture of Southeast Asian communities for generations. Because the tree takes up to 15 years to bear fruit, most seeds are still hand-harvested from wild trees — making each shell a product of old-growth forest and time. The hard, fibrous seed shell, with its distinctive grooved surface and triangular form, produces a sound prized for its depth and clarity, carrying the weight of the earth it grew from.
