Wind gongs differ from Chau gongs in their flat profile and absence of a raised rim. This design allows the entire surface of the gong to vibrate freely, producing a more open and shimmering sound. Their tone tends to develop quickly and expand outward with a lighter, more airy quality than many rimmed gongs. Because of this, wind gongs are often chosen for meditation environments where flowing, spacious resonance is desired.
