Bamboo transverse flutes offer a more open and expressive way to work with breath and sound. Played across the mouthpiece, the tone is shaped through subtle changes in airflow, allowing the sound to unfold in long, continuous phrases that follow the natural rhythm of breathing.

In practice, this style of flute invites a deeper level of attention. Rather than focusing on finger patterns alone, the player begins to work directly with breath, tone, and space.

The sound can be soft and spacious, or more defined and directed, depending on how the breath is guided.

Zacciah Blackburn, founder of Sunreed™ Instruments, began crafting bamboo flutes in the 1970s, developing a distinctive style of concert-quality instruments now played by musicians and sound practitioners around the world.

Zacciah is now largely retired from flute making, focusing on teaching sound healing and consciousness work with his partner Dorothy Stone. The flutes offered here represent the remaining instruments from his many years of crafting bamboo flutes by hand.

Each flute carries the natural character of bamboo, along with the refinement of decades of listening and craftsmanship.
