A hand-crafted clay flute carrying the voice of the jaguar

This clay jaguar flute is hand made in Teotihuacan, Mexico by artisan Jose Mendoza, who designs and build beautiful ocarina-style flutes, hand etching Aztec artwork.

When played, the flute produces a profound jaguar’s roar. The sound is raw, breath-centered, and alive with movement. It can also be played softer, connecting to the element of the wind and breath. 

The Voice of the Jaguar

Within many traditional cultures of Mexico and Mesoamerica, the jaguar has long held symbolic importance. Often associated with strength, night, protection, and the unseen world, the jaguar appeared throughout ceremonial art, mythology, and ritual practice.

Its presence was understood as something carrying relationship to instinct, transformation, and the movement between visible and invisible spaces. 

In practice, the call of the flute feels elemental and raw. 

While the jaguar call is its most recognizable voice, gentler blowing can also produce softer airy tones that resemble moving wind. This creates space for more subtle use within meditation, sound bath environments, or atmospheric accompaniment.

How We Met

from Jonathan Wood - I met Jose while traveling to Teotihuacan with my family, on a trip to Mexico City. When I arrived to Mexico, I had vivid images of flute playing come into my mind - not of the standard musical scales we are used to hearing, but elegant organic tones that spoke to the trees and the wind, in a meditative union. When I heard Jose playing his flute, it was the transcendent sound I imagined. For me these flutes are a way of connecting elementally to nature, and the natural present, enfused with deep intention and awareness. We at Sunreed are fortunate to be able to offer them.

Use in Practice

This flute invites an approach centered around breath and listening.

Rather than focusing on melody or performance, many practitioners work with the instrument slowly, allowing different textures to emerge through changes in breath pressure and pacing. Over time, the sound can become less about imitation and more about relationship with movement, air, and presence.

Within a sound bath setting, the flute can introduce moments that feel wild, spacious, or deeply earthy. Softer tones may blend into the background like moving wind, while stronger calls can create points of transition or attention within the space.

You do not need to force the sound. Often the most expressive moments arise through relaxed listening and gradual exploration.
