Turtle Shell Rattle
Natural form. Grounded tone.
These rattles are made from red-eared turtle shell, a material long used in instrument making across different parts of the world.
Each shell is mounted on a willow stick gathered near the Sandy River outside Portland, Oregon, and filled with corn to create a tone that is full-bodied, soft, and gently uplifting.
The handle is finished with deer leather and rabbit fur, adding to the natural feel and character of each piece.
The sound is rounded and supportive rather than sharp. It carries a steady presence in the hand and in the space, making it well-suited for personal work, ceremony, and slower rhythmic practice.
Because these are made from natural materials, each rattle carries its own variation in shell size, surface, tone, and adornment. No two are exactly alike.
