Bear, Buffalo, Moose and Elk Medicine Rattles
Strong tone. Ceremonial presence.
These rattles are handmade by a Maidu tribal member, using traditional materials and methods that bring together wood, hide, and natural fill.
Each element plays a role. The wooden handle, the rawhide head, and the internal materials—often including stone, teeth, or natural elements—combine to create a sound that is full, textured, and direct.
The tone of these rattles is more pronounced than many others. There is a sharpness to the attack and a strength in the body of the sound that carries clearly through space.
In practice, this gives the rattle a strong presence. The rhythm can feel clarifying—cutting through distraction and gathering attention quickly. Once that clarity is established, the sound can be used to support intention, pacing, and the movement of energy within a space.
Rattles have long been used to mark rhythm in ceremony. Over time, their use often becomes less about repetition and more about relationship—how the sound enters the space, how it shifts the field, and how it is received.
These rattles tend to meet that work directly.
Materials & Form
Each rattle is made from natural hide—Bear, Buffalo, Moose, or Elk—with optional fur adornment.
The size, shape, and materials vary slightly from piece to piece. The fill is selected to create a strong and responsive tone, and may include natural elements such as small bones or teeth.
Fur may match the hide or include other natural variations. Specific requests can be noted, though each piece is ultimately shaped by the materials available.
