12" Bear Drum BR1202
Heart of the Earth. Voice of the drum.
Across traditions worldwide, the frame drum is honored as a sacred instrument—carrying the rhythm of life, the pulse of the Earth, and a direct connection between sound, spirit, and human experience.
These traditional Native American-style frame drums are handcrafted with intention, care, and deep respect for both the materials and the lineage they represent.
A Living Instrument
Each drum is more than an object.
It is created in a prayerful and intentional process, where the hide, the wood, and the maker all contribute to its voice.
The result is an instrument that:
- carries a deep, resonant tone
- responds to the environment and the player
- develops a relationship over time
The drum is played, and it also teaches.
Traditional Craftsmanship
These drums are handmade by an experienced Native American drum maker, following traditional Lakota/Plains-style construction.
Key features include:
- Four-directional lacing for comfortable grip
- Full-wrap construction for strength and durability
- Tightly stretched natural hide for long-lasting tone
They are built to withstand extended use in ceremony, practice, and performance.
Choosing Your Drum: Size & Tone
Different sizes offer different voices and experiences:
- 10–12" — higher tone, lightweight, travel-friendly
- 14" — light, balanced, easy to hold for long periods
- 16" — deeper tone with manageable weight
- 18" (most recommended) — strong bass, full resonance, comfortable for most adults
Larger drums offer deeper bass and more resonance, while smaller drums offer ease of handling and portability.
Choosing Your Hide
Each animal hide brings its own tonal and physical qualities:
- Deer / Elk — thinner, lighter, responsive
- Horse / Moose — medium thickness, balanced durability
- Buffalo — thickest, deepest tone, most stable in humidity
Thinner hides are lighter and more responsive.
Thicker hides offer deeper tone and greater environmental stability.
Working With Natural Hide
Natural skin drums are responsive to climate:
- Humidity — softens the tone (can be restored with gentle heat or sun)
- Dry conditions — tightens the skin (raising pitch)
This responsiveness is part of the instrument’s nature—not a flaw.
The drum changes, and so does its voice.
The Medicine of the Drum
In traditional understanding, each animal carries its own medicine (spiritual quality).
Choosing a drum can be approached not only through sound and size—but through relationship.
Common associations include:
- Moose — feminine energy, life/death cycles
- Elk — strength and nobility
- Deer — gentleness, compassion, new beginnings
- Buffalo — abundance through right action
- Horse — power, movement, freedom
The connection between player and drum is personal—and often intuitive.
Ethical Sourcing
All hides are ethically sourced with respect for the animals.
They are:
- not from factory farming or confined conditions
- not sourced from industrial slaughter systems
- honored within a tradition that values the full cycle of life
The drum becomes a continuation, not an end.
Use in Practice
These drums are traditionally used for:
- ceremony and prayer
- healing and sound work
- meditation and rhythm-based practice
- community gatherings and song
They can be played softly or powerfully, each approach bringing out a different aspect of the drum’s voice.
Drum Beaters
Two main types of beaters are used:
- Soft beater — fuller, deeper bass tone (most recommended)
- Hard beater — sharper, more focused attack
Each reveals a different character of the drum.
A Personal Relationship
No two drums are the same.
Each carries:
- its own tone
- its own feel
- its own presence
Over time, the relationship between player and drum deepens.
A traditional instrument.
Alive, responsive, and rooted in something far older than sound alone.
- Hide: Bear
- Size: 12.0 inches
