Open resonance. Expansive expression.
Wind gongs offer a wide, dynamic voice that moves easily between deep grounding tones and powerful, expressive crashes. Their surface is nearly flat, with a gentle slope from center to edge, allowing the sound to develop quickly and with intensity.
Compared to a traditional Chau gong, a wind gong tends to open more rapidly. The fundamental tone emerges with depth, and with only a little more energy, the sound expands outward into a full spectrum of overtones. This makes the wind gong especially responsive, capable of both subtle, low resonance and immediate, immersive expression.
Many practitioners are drawn to wind gongs for this versatility. A single instrument can move from a soft, pulsing bass tone into a broad, shimmering field of sound with very little effort.
Working with Size and Tone
The character of a wind gong changes noticeably with size:
12"–16"
Light, bright, and quick to respond. These smaller gongs produce higher tones with a fast, immediate crash and shorter sustain. Easy to hold and move, they are often used around the body in therapeutic settings or to open and close a practice.
18"–24"
More balanced in tone, with both mid-range presence and emerging depth. These gongs remain light enough to hold, while offering a greater range between the fundamental tone and the full crash. This allows for more exploration and subtlety in playing.
26"–28"
A deeper, more grounded voice begins to emerge. These sizes can produce a strong low tone similar to larger Chau gongs, while still maintaining the responsive nature of the wind gong.
30" and above
Expansive and immersive. Larger wind gongs offer a wide range of frequencies—from deep, sustained bass to bright, expressive highs. Their voice can feel powerful and full, with a sense of movement that continues to unfold as the sound develops.
A Responsive Instrument
One of the defining qualities of a wind gong is how quickly it responds to touch.
A soft strike can reveal a low, steady tone that settles into the body.
With more energy, the sound expands rapidly, moving into a full and vibrant crash.
Because of this, wind gongs are often chosen by practitioners who want an instrument that can move fluidly between grounding and activation within a session.
Choosing a Wind Gong
There are two simple considerations when selecting a gong:
Size and weight
Smaller gongs are easier to hold and move through a space. Larger gongs are typically played on a stand and offer greater depth and sustain.
Your relationship to the sound
More than any specification, what matters most is how the gong feels to you. Listening is the best guide. The way a tone settles in your body, or how it shapes the space around you, will tell you far more than size or price.
A Practice-Centered Approach
Wind gongs do not require complex technique. They invite exploration.
You may begin with a single tone, struck gently and allowed to unfold. Over time, you may discover how different areas of the gong respond, how the sound builds, and how it interacts with the space around you.
In this way, the gong becomes less something you play, and more something you listen with.
Gongs are handcrafted, metal instruments. Because of this, each gong will carry natural variations in its surface, coloration, and subtle aspects of its sound. Each gong is carefully selected for its sound quality, tonal balance, and overall presence.
These nuances are part of the character of the instrument. However, if you are particularly sensitive to these details, or are looking for something very specific, please feel free to be in touch, we can help guide you toward the right selection.
At Sunreed™, we take great care in preparing each instrument before it leaves our shop. Many of the instruments we offer are handmade or individually selected, and each one is carefully inspected, listened to, and packed so it arrives safely and ready for practice.
