Balance. Cycles. A sound that unfolds between stillness and expression.

Sun & Moon Chau gongs carry the same deep, layered voice as a traditional Chau gong, while also offering a visual reflection of balance through the stylized sun and moon design on their surface.

These gongs are known for the way their sound develops gradually over time. A soft strike reveals a deep, grounding tone that settles into the body. As the gong is played with more presence, additional tones begin to emerge, slowly expanding into a wider field of sound.

With continued playing, the sound builds in both complexity and intensity, eventually opening into a full and expressive crash.

A Sound That Evolves

Unlike gongs that respond immediately, the Chau gong unfolds in stages.

You may begin with a single, steady tone, then gradually uncover layers of overtones, subtle interactions, and shifting textures. Each strike can reveal something new, allowing the sound to develop organically over time.

This creates a wide range of possibilities, from quiet, meditative grounding to full, immersive resonance.

Sun & Moon Symbolism

The stylized sun and moon design reflects a natural balance:

  • light and dark
  • expansion and contraction
  • activity and stillness

In practice, this can be felt in the way the gong moves between its deep fundamental tone and its more expansive, expressive frequencies.

The visual design becomes part of the experience, an anchor for intention, and a reminder of the cycles present within both sound and awareness.

Working with the Gong

A gentle strike allows the fundamental tone to emerge and sustain.

With continued playing, the sound expands, revealing higher tones and a broader field of vibration. If played with more intensity, the gong will move into a full crash, where the higher frequencies become more pronounced and active.

Because of this gradual development, the Chau gong offers a great deal of flexibility in how it is used within a session.

Choosing Your Gong

As with all gongs, two things matter most:

Size and weight
Larger gongs offer greater depth, longer sustain, and more space for the sound to unfold. Smaller gongs are more portable and respond more quickly.

Your relationship to the sound
Listening is the most important guide. The way a gong resonates with you will shape how you work with it.

A Practice-Centered Approach

The Chau gong invites patience and attention.

Rather than forcing sound, you can allow it to emerge, beginning with stillness, and gradually expanding into fullness. Over time, you may find yourself listening not only to the sound itself, but to the space it creates.

In this way, the gong becomes both an instrument and an experience.

What's Included

You'll receive:

  • One Sun & Moon Chau gong in the size of your choice
  • A traditional cloth mallet

You may also choose to upgrade your mallet and purchase a gong stand.

Natural Variations in Each Gong

Gongs are handcrafted, metal instruments. Because of this, each gong will carry natural variations in its surface, coloration, and subtle aspects of its sound. Each gong is carefully selected for its sound quality, tonal balance, and overall presence.

These nuances are part of the character of the instrument. However, if you are particularly sensitive to these details, or are looking for something very specific, please feel free to be in touch, we can help guide you toward the right selection.
