Hokema sansulas are finely crafted in Germany, combining a kalimba with a resonating membrane to create a more spacious and immersive sound.
Built with a cherrywood frame and either natural or synthetic head (depending on model), the instrument carries both clarity and depth.
A Spacious and Living Voice
Sansulas produce the same bright, bell-like tones as a kalimba, but with an added resonance created by the membrane beneath.
This creates a soft “wah” or pulsing effect as the sound moves—giving the tone a more fluid and atmospheric quality.
Scale: A minor scale
The tuning allows the notes to blend naturally, creating a continuous and flowing harmonic field.
A Practice-Centered Approach
This is an instrument that invites slow and attentive playing.
Even a few notes can create a rich and immersive sound. The resonance responds to subtle movement, making it feel alive and shifting.
