From Zacciah Blackburn...

Most people have experienced moments when life feels unusually clear.

Not necessarily easy, and not free of challenges, but somehow aligned. There is a sense of being connected to something larger than the concerns of the moment while also feeling fully engaged with the life unfolding in front of us.

We know where we are. We know what matters. And our actions seem to arise from a deeper place.

At other times, the opposite can occur. We may feel disconnected, uncertain, or pulled in different directions. Life becomes busy, but not necessarily meaningful. We move, but without a clear sense of what is guiding that movement.

Many spiritual and esoteric traditions have explored this tension and arrived at a similar insight: human beings seem to live between two fundamental movements.

One is the movement of Essence.

The other is the movement of Purpose.

Essence refers to what we are beneath our roles, identities, accomplishments, and stories. It is the quiet ground of awareness itself—the aspect of us that remains present through every stage of life. Different traditions describe it in different ways, but it is often experienced as spacious, luminous, intelligent, and whole.

Purpose is something different.

Purpose is the movement of that deeper nature into expression. It is how life unfolds through action, relationship, creativity, service, learning, and experience. While Essence rests in being, Purpose moves into becoming.

These two aspects are not separate.

They are complementary movements of the same life.

One provides depth.

The other provides direction.

When they come into relationship, life often feels more coherent. We are not simply acting, nor are we merely observing. We are participating in life while remaining connected to something deeper than the activity itself.

Some traditions symbolize this relationship through two energetic points associated with human awareness.

The point above the head is sometimes called the Soul Star. It is associated with higher awareness, expanded perspective, inspiration, and the sense of connection to something greater than the individual self.

The point below the feet is often called the Earth Star. While discussed less frequently, it is equally important. It represents grounding, embodiment, stability, and our connection to the living intelligence of the Earth.

Together, these points create a vertical axis of awareness.

One opens upward into spaciousness. The other roots downward into presence.

Between them, human life unfolds.

What makes this relationship meaningful is not the points themselves, but what happens when awareness includes both. When we become aware of the space above and the ground below, many people notice a subtle shift. The mind becomes quieter. The body feels more settled. A sense of inner organization begins to emerge.

This is not something we force into existence. It is something we notice.

Sometimes it appears as clarity about a decision. Sometimes it feels like being deeply present in a conversation or creative project. At other times, it arrives simply as a quiet sense that we are where we need to be.

The experience can be difficult to define, yet it is often immediately recognizable.

Over time, the relationship between Essence and Purpose becomes less like a concept and more like a lived reality. We begin to recognize that a meaningful life is not created solely through action, nor solely through contemplation. It emerges through the ongoing conversation between the two.

Purpose without Essence can leave us constantly striving.

Essence without Purpose can remain unexpressed.

But when they come into balance, something begins to flow more naturally. Our actions become informed by a deeper awareness, and our awareness finds expression through the way we live.

This balance is not a permanent achievement. It is a living relationship.

There will be times when we feel deeply connected and times when we feel distant from that connection. There will be periods of clarity and periods of uncertainty.

Yet beneath those changing experiences, the relationship remains available.

The spaciousness above. The grounding below. And the living field of awareness between them.

Perhaps the invitation is not to seek something new, but simply to remember what is already here.

To notice the openness that exists beyond our thoughts. To feel the support that exists beneath our feet. And to discover what becomes possible when both are held in awareness at the same time.

As awareness deepens, the distance between Essence and Purpose begins to soften.

What we know in stillness gradually finds expression in the world. What we encounter in the world deepens our understanding of ourselves. And life becomes an ongoing conversation between the two.
