This is a turtle shell medicine rattle made with red ear turtle shell, which is naturally plentiful in the Southern US. The shell is mounted on a willow stick found on the Sandy Near near Portland, Oregon. These are filled with corn, and adorned with rabbit fur and deer leather.
The corn gives these rattles a full bodied, yet soft and uplifting note.
