These rattles are hand-crafted by Hopi artist Dorleen Gashweseoma, using traditional materials and weaving techniques.
The rattle heads are formed from yucca, dyed and woven into shape, then secured with leather wrapping. This method gives each piece a distinct texture and visual presence, with subtle variations in pattern and tone.
The sound is light and articulate, with a natural dryness that carries clearly without being overpowering.
In practice, these rattles lend themselves to more subtle rhythmic work—where clarity, movement, and spacing of sound become more noticeable. The lighter voice allows for a more refined relationship with rhythm, especially in quieter settings or more detailed work.
Each piece reflects the care of handwork and the continuity of material and form, carrying forward a tradition that is both simple and expressive.
