What is coherence?
Coherence refers to our fundamental feeling states. The word itself means that which binds things together. The coherent positive feeling states do exactly that. States such as peacefulness, tranquility, unconditional love, compassion, and kindness naturally draw people together. These states bond us. People want to be part of them. When someone is emanating a field of coherence, others feel it and naturally want to join in that resonance.
This is the nature of entrainment — one of the scientific and mystical principles behind why sound works so readily.
When we give voice to these coherent states, whether through crystal bowls, drums, or our own voice, those states begin to fill the room. They are not just ideas we speak about; they become a vibrational presence that others can feel. As that resonance spreads through the space, people begin to align with it. They come into harmony with it. They entrain to those coherent states.
There is a growing body of science that speaks to this process. The HeartMath Institute, for example, has done extensive work exploring coherent emotional states.
They have even created music and sound environments designed to support people in entering deep relaxation and emotional balance. Their research shows measurable physiological changes — improvements in immune response, shifts in blood pressure, and changes in respiratory patterns that reflect greater harmony in the body.
What science is beginning to measure today is something the ancient traditions understood long ago. They recognized that coherent emotional and spiritual states support wellness at every level of our being. This is why the great teachers of many wisdom traditions place such emphasis on how we hold our awareness, how we make our choices, and how we carry ourselves in the world.
When we cultivate coherent states within ourselves, the results naturally extend outward. Our actions become more aligned, our relationships deepen, and the environments we create become more supportive of healing and transformation.
In this way, coherence becomes not just a concept, but a way of living — a way of bringing our awareness, our choices, and our actions into harmony with the deeper rhythms of life.
