Prayer fans are traditionally used to guide the smoke of sage, palo santo, or other ceremonial herbs during cleansing and blessing practices. The movement of the fan helps direct the flow of smoke, supporting a more intentional and focused experience.

In many traditions, feathers are understood to carry prayers—symbolically connecting earth and sky, and offering a way to move intention through space.

Handcrafted and One of a Kind

These Native-made smudge fans are handcrafted by a Navajo artist using natural materials and traditional techniques.

Each fan features natural turkey feathers, arranged and bound to a deer bone handle wrapped in leather. The handle is accented with beadwork and fringe, and the center feather is hand painted with colors and patterns that reflect the artist’s individual expression.

Because each piece is made by hand, no two fans are exactly alike. Variations in feather shape, coloration, beadwork, and painted design are a natural part of the process, giving each fan its own unique character.

Working with the Fan

The fan can be used to gently guide smoke around the body, through a room, or across objects during a cleansing or blessing practice.

The movement itself becomes part of the experience—slow, intentional, and connected to breath and awareness.
