The Shang, or Bon bell, is a traditional Tibetan instrument with roots in the ancient Bon shamanic lineage.

Small and hand-held, it is a flat bell that produces a bright, penetrating tone when struck.

The sound is immediate and focused, carrying cleanly through a space and drawing attention into the present moment.

A Focused and Penetrating Voice

The tone rises quickly and resolves with clarity.

It does not linger like a singing bowl, but instead creates a distinct point in time—an interruption, a clearing, or a call. Its voice can be used to mark transitions, reset attention, or bring definition to a space.

Form and Tradition

The Shang is traditionally used for invocation and dispelling—clearing what is stagnant, and calling in what is aligned.

Its form reflects a balance of qualities: the bell as a container, and the striker as the activating force. Together, they express a relationship between stillness and action, receptivity and movement.

Historically, the Shang is sometimes placed upright on an altar when not in use, held in a position of readiness and presence.
