                                                                                                                                Root Shakuhachi
The Shakuhachi is a traditional Japanese end-blown bamboo flute. The Shakuhachi's history is steeped in myth and lore of Samurai warriors turned Bhuddist monks. Its secrets were locked in traditional contemplative societies for centuries until the Emperor brought this unique flute instrument into his court, and eventually the general public, in the 19th century.

Our Shakuhachi are tuned to traditional minor pentatonic scales, utilizing digital quartz tuners. The Shakuhachi’s rich, unique tonal quality is unlike that of side-blown bamboo flutes. Though more difficult to play, it is preferred by many because of its haunting tonality and meditative quality.

Root Shakuhachi: closeup
ROOT SHAKUHACHI
Root Shakuhachi
This Japanese end-blown bamboo flute, the shakuhachi, is traditionally made from the root stalk of the bamboo plant, giving the flute a slightly richer, sweeter tone, and an aesthetic quality unmatched by any other flute.  (Feng shui practitioners will say the root also holds more "chi".)  Our roots are traditional high quality madake, cured for years before beginning the more difficult process of creating these beautiful instruments.
(Less expensive roots & student model root shakuhachi may occasionally be available.)
Tuned to high specifications, in traditional minor pentatonic scales, unless otherwise requested, utilizing digital quartz tuners.   Concert quality with close to two, or more, registers of range.
Our flutemaker, though a master flutemaker, does not utilize a specific style of the Japanese Schools of Shakuhachi in his design.
All flutes have a natural umaguchi (mouthpiece), and are lacquered on the outside, and rubbed with oil on the inside.

Each instrument comes with full warranty and complete instructions.  Most flutes have in line fingering.  Please advise if you have a preference.  Larger flutes (C and above, may have offset fingering for ease of play.)
Cases available in Accessories section for best care and protection of your instruments, or see listings in non root shakuhachi above, for pricing of bags by flute size.  Also same shipping charges apply as by sizes above.  For additional instructions, including CD/book guides, see below.    These are especially beneficial for those who wish to learn traditional Japanese notation and music.

    Wooden Shakuhachi

These traditional Japanese musical instruments are made of select maple rather than conventional bamboo, by Zen-on, known for years for their fine acoustics in recorders and other wooden products.  The use of wood makes it possible to get the most acoustically ideal bore without being subject to the shape of natural bamboo.  These fine shakuhachi have the endorsement of such highly respected players as Katsuya Yokoyama and Hozan Yamamoto.

    Kinko Shakuhachi

A Video Lesson in English (Vol. 1)

    Available in

Bruce Huebner, KINKO SHAKUHACHI FOR BEGINNERS: A Video Lesson in English (Vol. 1) V-4 DVD $35.00

Includes performance and notation examples with exercises and pointers on tone production, the traditional notation system, and basic Kinko ornamentation.

Here is the first of a long-awaited series of video playing guides for shakuhachi in English. Beginning and intermediate students of the shakuhachi will all find this edition useful and informative.

Kinko Shakuhachi is distinguished by the use of ornamentation, particularly the atari breath-finger attack, and by the variety of tone colors, most notably the meri techniques and alternate fingerings, available to the player.

After a brief introduction to various performance settings for Kinko shakuhachi, this video guide gradually introduces the notation system, techniques and fingerings using pieces drawn from the traditional Kinko honkyoku repertoire..

The musical compositions presented include Yuyake Koyake, Sakura, Kojo no Tsuki, and Kimigayo, amongst others. Particular attention is paid to the atari attack which is used on nearly every note in the performance examples. Huebner carefully demonstrates, discusses and takes the student through each melody with close-ups of actual performance and the traditional Kinko notation. 41 minutes. V-4

Available in DVD format.  Lessons 2 and 3 available on request.

Bruce Huebner is the first non-Japanese to graduate from the Japanese Music Department of the Tokyo University of Fine Arts & Music. He studied shakuhachi with Jensuke Kawase and earned his master teaching degree from Chikuyusha in 1995. He is currently Assistant Professor of Music at Fukushima College for Women in Japan.

It provides information on fashioning the blowing edge and inserting the utaguchi, lacquering the bore, binding and repair. Bindings

Bindings are traditional on many shakuhachi.  They are added to assist in diminishing the likelihood of cracking in bamboo.  While any bamboo is subject to the possibility of cracking over time, especially in dry climates, we find that when bamboo is properly cured, finished, and cared for, binding becomes more of an aesthetic than necessary enhancement to the flute.  Also, we find, over time, the bindings are likely to come loose, from general expansion and contraction of the flute.  We therefore, recommend, if you wish bindings, you learn the knot, called "whipping", in order to maintain the bindings.  Instructions on tieing this simple knot are available in most any sailing, boy/girl scout, fishing, or flutemaking manuals.
We will bind your flute upon request, for $30. for flutes up to alto C, 4-6 bindings, as we feel aesthetically balanced to that piece of bamboo; and 7-10 times for $60.  Again, we will find the balance of the number of the bindings we feel aesthetic to that particular flute.  You may see images of each style above.   Ask for pricing on larger sizes.
